Then Comes Marriage: An Evening with Roberta Kaplan

The Murnaghan Fellowship, 10.22.15

The Francis D. Murnaghan, Jr. Appellate Advocacy Fellowship Presents

Reflections on the landmark Supreme Court case striking down the “Defense of Marriage Act”

Renowned litigator Roberta Kaplan successfully argued that the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violated the United States Constitution by barring legally married same-sex couples from enjoying the wide-ranging benefits of marriage conferred under federal law. The landmark decision in United States v. Windsor opened the floodgates, as lower courts across the country have relied on it to extend equal rights to gay people under the law.
